Algerian Dinar DZD history

The currency of Algeria is Algerian Dinar.  It is abbreviated as DZD or DA.  The symbol for DZD can be scripted as DA. The Algerian Dinar is subdivided into 100 Santeem.

Roman denarius led to the derivation of the term dinar.  Algerian New Franc was in usage prior to the introduction of at par Algerian Dinar in 1964.

The first series of dinar banknotes were made available in 1964 with denominations of 5, 10, 50 and 100 dinar; 500 dinar notes were included in 1970; 1000 dinar notes were issued in 1992.

The 100 dinar notes are being substituted with coins; however, 200, 500, and 1000 dinar notes are in circulation. The 500 and 1000 dinar notes that have been issued in 1998 have a vertical holographic strip on obverse in addition to the old design features of the note.

Coins of denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 santeem, and 1 dinar were introduced in 1964.  A new series of coins of ¼, ½, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dinar were introduced in 1992.

Due to the massive inflation, the fractional dinar coins have been dropped out of circulation. However, the prices are typically quoted in santeem.
