Barbados Dollar BBD history

The Barbados dollar is the currency for Barbados from the year 1982.  The ISO 4217 code is BBD and it is abbreviated as $; however, to avoid confusion with other currencies in the world it is represented as Bds$.  100 cents makes one Barbados dollar.

The first paper notes issued for the Barbados dollars was in the form of confidential banknotes.  There were no subdivisions of dollar issued then.

Coins were issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 25 cents and 1 dollar in 1973. 1 cent was struck in bronze in 1991. From 1992, zinc plated with copper was used to mint coins, 5 cents were minted in brass and the 5, 10 and 25 cents were minted in cupro-nickel.  The Royal Canadian Mint does most of the coins in current use.
The Central Bank of Barbados issued notes in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 100 dollars in 1973.  The 1 dollar note was not issued after that.  2 dollars notes were introduced in 1980, followed by 50 dollars in 1989.
Currency notes that are currently in circulation include 2 dollars in blue, 5 dollars  in green, 10 dollars in brown, 20 dollars in purple, 50 dollars in orange, 100 dollars in gray.
