Syrian Pound SYP

The National currency of Syria is Syrian pound. One pound is divided into 100 piastre.The ISO 4217 code is CHF. The coins in current use are 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 pounds.

The currency notes in circulation are 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 pounds. The Central Bank is Central Bank of Syria.

Initial coinage was issued between 1947 and 1948 in values of 2½, 5, 10, 25 and 50 qirsha and 1 pound, with the 2½, 5 and 10 qirush minted in cupro-nickel and the others in silver. In 1996, new coins were issued in values of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 25 pounds.

In 1919, the Banque de Syrie issued notes for 5, 25 and 50 qirsha, 1 and 5 livres, followed, in 1920, by notes for 1 qirsh and 10, 25, 50 and 100 livres. Between 1942 and 1944, the government introduced notes for 5, 10, 25 and 50 qirsha. In 1997 and 1998, a new series of notes was issued in values of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 pounds, with the lower values replaced by coins.
